What is the difference between wax-based, oil-based and water-soluble pencils?

Wax-based cores such as Luminance 6901 lay down soft, opaque color and blend easily by burnishing. Oil-based cores such as Pablo hold a sharper point and suit fine detail and hatching. Water-soluble cores such as Supracolor Soft Aquarelle and Museum Aquarelle dissolve with a wet brush so one pencil covers both drawing and painting.

What does lightfastness mean and where do I find the ratings?

Lightfastness describes how well a pigment resists fading in light. Caran d’Ache rates the Luminance range against ASTM D6901; per-color ratings live on each product page under Item Specs, and the full chart is available as a download.

Do you sell open stock, or only sets?

Most artist lines are available both ways. Each product line page lists sets first, then the full open stock color range, so a retailer can fill a display and an artist can replace a single pencil from the same page.

Which sharpener should I use with these pencils?

Standard 7–8 mm barrels work with any quality handheld or desk sharpener. Maxi and woodless barrels need a wide-hole sharpener — the Möbius + Ruppert brass and magnesium sharpeners we carry cover both diameters.
